WHY SPORT?

The disruption in traditional businesses and professions bought about by the
internet, the rate of advancement in computing and the speed of development
of machine learning and AI paints a mortifying picture for the future job markets
and traditional careers. These are careers that our entire education
system has been developed around. Preparing people for Professional services,
manufacturing or research.

The most common question we get asked from our parents, and parents in general is, why should i invest in sports? For my child? Besides the obvious physical and health benefits, we at hotfut like to focus on the psychological, social and emotional benefits. This is because it also helps us best answer the question at hand. To make my point clear, i would like to, for amoment, try and gaze into the potential future of jobs, careers, and lifestyles that the next few generations will be living in. The disruption in traditional businesse and professions bought about by the internet, the rate of advancement in computing (a’ la’ moor’s law) and the speed of development of machine learning and ai paints a mortifying picture for the future job markets and traditional careers. (that’s a long sentence, auto-correct just asked me to consider editing structure. I the near future, i’m sure it will do it for me). These are careers that our entire education system has been developed around. Preparing people for professional services, manufacturing or research. Internet is bridging communication barriers to an extent that brokering, trading and any form of arbitration professions that exist due to information asymmetry will soon cease to exist. The advent of 5g (let alone 6 and 7g) is making professional services from legal representation toheart surgery now extendable to people across the world from one common
source.

The ability of machines and AI to compute and execute with extreme precision and efficiency is making traditional manufacturing and engineering obsolete. Everything our traditional education, and
in effect traditional careers are gearing ustowards, are being made redundant by advanced technologies.
In the next 10-15 years the world and jobs as we know it won’t exist the way they do now. So what will exist? What will PEOPLE do?
I think, while Intelligence based (IQ) jobs and careers are being made redundant Emotional based (EQ) and Social-based (SQ) jobs and careers will gain major importance in the future of careers. The
ability of AI and tech to replicate these complex social and emotional abilities that humans possess will take a lot longer.
So, what jobs do these EQ and SQ-based professions encompass? At the top of my head, Sales. The ability to close a deal is a combination of understanding people, feelings, emotions, situations, empathy, and compassion and using these emotional inputs, navigating a convincing
pitch/negotiation is going to be a critical skill of people and emotions.
Other careers like Storytelling, Oration, Music, Art, Psychology, Direction, and Design. Anything that uses creativity and improvisation as a foundational skill set. Skills that are a subset of something imperfect. Not replicable by the cold hand of logic. These are the skills I would place my bet on for the future of jobs and careers. And how do we best inculcate these skills in our children? How do you
teach social skills and emotional understanding?
By experience. By encouraging environments that prompt continuous exposure to the application of these skills. In my limited experience, I have found
sports and competitive games to deliver the maximum instances of these learnings in a limited time frame. The best part of it was, I never even knew I was learning. I was just Playing! My son is all of 4 years old. My education environment choices
are – free play, imagination, music, dance and SPORT. To create an environment that makes him fall in love with the process of learning and discovering itself. To make him emotionally, morally and socially stronger. For everything else he has
Google.

WHY SPORT?

WHAT IS SPORT TO INDIA?

Why is the prime minister and the entire top brass of our government focusing on sports and games as an essential aspect of the nations development? Defining all odds and aligned polictial parties with a young olympian as a sports minister.

The choices of the sports ministers, budgets and speed of expediting programs like the khelo india games among other sorts promotion policies, hints at a desperation to act in the interest of sports development.
We at hotfut have our theory, and it resounds with the our philosophy, our raison d etre, if you may, and it is as simple as the games themselves. Get in the game
but concealed within its simplicity is probably one of the most defining truths toward the building of human capital of this nation. Participation in sports builds i believe that character and personality, in humans, is built through trials and tribulations.
Only when a muscle is pushed to its limit (or temporary failure) does it rebuild stronger. Only when steel is heated to extreme temperatures and then quenched does it harden. So it is with character. Only through testing situations and life altering (in this case character altering) challenges thrown at you, do you come out a stronger, wiser, a more
defined person.
Unfortunately, in todays urban inhabited society of abundance and supply not all of us are blessed / cursed with such challenges. Sports however, offers micro doses of such situations. In every competitive game, in every match and tournament, in every victory and every defeat, our character gets mini dozes of lives challenges.

From the pride of victory to the humility of defeat, from the communication breakdown under pressure, to finding collaboration and rhythm through team work. From nemesis to friendships. Every single game is pushing a social, physiological and behavioural development in the participant.
These are skills, traditional academia focused education fails to provide. These are life skills needed in the everyday existence in a world of people and communities. The quality of human capital produced by our current education system is deplorable. The lack of civic sense, apathy to the larger society, whether it be through littering or an enraging lack of traffic sense. All are sure shot signs of a deplete quality of human capital.
We are a young nation. In-fact we are the largest, youngest nation with a soon to be average age of 28 years (by 2025). The sheer potential of this emerging young indian workforce is frightening to the rest of the world.
Our prime minister recognizes this power, and the urgent call to arms to mould his
future army of young workers, engineers, doctors, farmers, entrepreneurs and athletes to becoming the best version of themselves.
He has recognized the potential of sport in building the ethical, social and behavioral character of our people. He wants to build the quality of human capital in this young indian workforce. Through sport. Like our pm we at hotfut have the same vision. We want to help build the nation, by building up the people in it.
Our simple message. Get in the game> is a war cry, to get people to move of their sedentary lifestyles as passive consumers of sports to active participants. To making the young people of our nation physically, socially, psychologically and
behaviorally – better.

The Story of Resilience and Agility

A STORY OF RESILIENCE AND AGILITY

I’ve recently been inspired by stoicism and my reading lists and podcasts playlist seemed to be brimming (ironic for a stoic) with advocacy of simple living.

A STORY OF RESILIENCE AND AGILITY 17th September 2021, Economic Times Leaders of Tomorrow Conclave. The announcements for the category of services are announced. Hearing the candidates nominated, me and my colleagues see our grip on that award loosening with
every competitor’s credentials being announced. We’re at a third of the turnover and in some cases a tenth as compared to the other nominees. Our profitability numbers dwarf in comparison tosome of the giants in our category. (Best MSME Services) The moment arrives, the winners, announced by one of the most prominent thought leaders in our country, the Chie Economic Advisor to the Government of India, Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal. To everyone’s surprise, ours the most, the name announced is HotFut Sports. We were dumbstruck, and the only question I had
for Mr Sanyal on stage was, WHY? His answer – We are looking for the leaders of TOMORROW. Not the cash cows of today.
What makes the future leader? A future full of uncertainty and ever-changin technological disruptions. A Future where existing business and industry standards are decimated overnight by, for example, AI and machine learning, automation and robotics. To his mind, the answer was defined by two words – Resilience andAgility.
Resilience – in the face of uncertainty, of rising competition both from within the industry and from across industries. A company whose foundations are strong enough to weather the storm and roughpatches, to find a way to survive when everything around them seems to be
going against them. And Agility. – The ability to be flexible as an organization. To adapt to industry changes, tech trends or whatever major disruption heads your way. To be able to pivot, entire business models, that too multiple times if need be.
To find a way to align or compete with the disruption on hand and be flexible enough to make sweeping changes to the way you conduct your affairs to align to the new norms. So apparently, we had an abundance of both resilience and agility. But how did we get there?
In all honesty, mostly by accident. But reflecting on these accidents gives us great insight into how to be prepared to
be a company for the future. Upon reflection, we identified that we had 5 years of terrible luck combined perilously, with short-sighted, hasty decisions on investments made for our expansion. Market conditions had changed with low entry barriers in our business moving us down the ladder from pioneers with an innovative product, to one of 350 new companies that established on our model within 3 years. We ventured into allied business and expanded both horizontally and geographically,  without possessing the management prowess or execution bandwidth to do so. This was followed by a 2-year COVID that decimated our industry specifically. All these factors led to a
plunging bottom line and a P&L that was in the red for 4 straight years and plunging. Resilience -We got out, by taking some really harsh decisions. As owners, we had to sacrifice any and all salaries or perks for ourselves.

We had to shutter bleeding projects and locations no matter the social or emotional repercussions. Leading to some long and old friendships being soured in the process. We had to renegotiate banking terms, re-mortgage assets, and sometimes even personal. We had to incur the heat and flak from creditors whom we were unable to pay and grudgingly work out payment schedules with folded hands. But no matter how hard and insurmountable the odds, we never lost our confidence or optimism in our ability to make it out and survive. This chapter of our lives was ugly, to say the least. How
did we build this resilience?
A) Belief – in our Philosophy and our purpose.
B) Desperation – We had put everything we had into this. Calling it quits was just not an option. I was personally financially highly exposed. All my personal networks and reputation were invested into it. There was no option BUT to keep bailing out the water.
Lesson – Be FULLY vested in what you do.
If you leave an easy way out, a back passage exit. You WILL take it. I know I would have. In the words of Charles Bukowski –
Find what you love and let it kill you. For all things WILL kill you, both slowly and fastly, but it’s much better to be killed by a lover.
c) Responsibility – Having a team that took pay cuts with us. Faced head-on with the rough creditor calls, the customer complaints, and the downgrade in lifestyle. Without us ever asking them to.
They never lost faith in us. We owed it to them.
Lesson – Build a culture of loyalty and responsibility at the core of your organisation.
There are several ways to do it. The one that worked for us was radical transparency and a democratic approach to decision-making. Authority is earned in our organization by demonstrated energy and outcomes, constantly.
This was our story of resilience. Agility – I remember distinctly a board meeting, at one of our lowest points, where I was given the task of making – the
company grow aggressively, without capital
investments and while being risk averse. I gawked at the time at my fellow board members at the sheer audacity to suggest such a ludicrous proposition. I believe my response (as per the officially recorded Minutes of the Board meeting)
was “and we can throw in the Taj Mahal,
since we’re only dreaming”.
Through this period, we did change our model. Not once but several times. We pivoted from an infrastructure dependant Pay and Play product-driven company to a services-driven consulting, academyand events management company. We reduced our dependence on Pay and play (which is highly price sensitive and highly volatile) from 90% to 30% within 3 years.
We pivoted from a capital-intensive model to a Capex-free model whereas a policy we do not invest in capital infrastructure, but use our knowledge and capability to execute operate and deliver ROIs for large developers, institutions and
government bodies. We pivoted from high-risk fixed Opex contracts to moreamiable revenue share models thereby deleveraging our risks. We demonstrated resilience in the face of insurmountable odds and agility time and again to adapt as the market shifted.
How did we do this? How did we build strength and fighting spirit as a company?
How did we create such a flexible system that the company and the people in it, could change, adapt and evolve faster than others?
Our secret – we have pinpointed it down to – Our culture. We staggered and stumbled our way into our culture. However, the philosophy that guides it was always there as a constan baseline in our purpose and our motto. Resistance builds character. Driven constantly by our philosophy of resistance-building character, we kept the belief that this too shall pass and we will emerge stronger wiser and better prepared for the future.
Lesson – Have a strong purpose. One that you truly believe in. Not a fancy-sounding tagline on a wall.

The Science of Stress

THE SCIENCE OF STRESS

People with chronic stress in their lives had a 43% increased risk of dying. But, that was ONLY true for people who believed that stress was harmful to them.

Anybody that knows me, my companies or has read my articles, knows, that I am a big fan of resistance. As much as you hate the tough times, they are the ones that
define you.. One of the biggest outcomes of tough and
challenging times is the STRESS that comes along with it. I have spent the last 2 decades avoiding stress, reading books, and practising yoga and meditation to avoid and control my Stress. It has led to my IBS and stomach issues, been the primary cause of my drastic and sudden hair fall to near baldness and played an influential factor in determining my workload. So you can imagine that I
was more than intrigued when I can cross the work of Dr. Kelly McGonigal on stress actually being good for! She suggests that we have been viewing stress all wrong. That stress makes you sick, weak and increases the risk of everything from cardiopulmonary diseases to Type 2 Diabetes and neurological disorders. That stress is the enemy. But there is a differing point of view that’s. emerging and the science behind it seems to back the latter’s point of view. There was a study conducted in the United States of over 30,000 adults over 8 years. They asked people How much
stress they feel they have or how stressed they are? They also added an additional question, “Do you believe stress is harmful?” Then 8 years later, they tracked public health records to see who died!
People with chronic stress in their lives had a 43% increased risk of dying. But, that was ONLY true for people who believed that stress was harmful to them. And it doesn’t stop there, another really
cool part to this, is that Stress Makes you Social. Here’s where one of my all-time favourite H&N (here and now) chemicals kicks in. You guessed it. Oxytocin. Yes, oxytocin has been much hyped, but after learning the following facts, you will believe its credit is well due. Oxytocin, the cuddle hormone, is a neurological hormone that’s designed to strengthen close relationships. It makes you want to make contact with other humans, to seek and extend help and support. It makes you more compassionate and caring. Most people know this,
what most people don’t know is that Oxytocin
is a Stress hormone! Its secreted by the pituitary gland and is mostly released under stress. Your biological stress response is nudging you to tell someone how you feel. We are social creatures. Our
survival instinct is in packs. We are wired to seek help in the community. In other people. The Stress response in your body wants to make you notice when others are struggling.  How does it make you healthier? It doesn’t just act on your brain but your
body too. Its main role in the body is to protect the heart muscles from the natural harmful effects of stress. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and also keeps blood vessels dilated.
My favourite part however is that the Hearth has special receptors for oxytocin and oxytocin’s primary role in the stress response is actually to heal the heart muscles damaged from stress.
And all these impacts are exponentially enhanced by social contact. I find it AMAZING that your stress response has a built-in mechanism for stress resilience and that mechanism is human connection.
So we now know that stress is not actually ad for you and how you view stress matters Biologically speaking, the mental and physical effects of how you view stress can actually be the difference between you having a stroke in your 40s vs you living a very healthy life way into your 90s. It doesn’t really end there. I want to talk about another such study that was carried out recently.

The bad news first. People with chronic stress in their lives had a 43% increased risk of dying. But, that was ONLY true for people who believed that stress was harmful to them. In fact, and here’s the
amazing part, there was an extremely low probability of death amongst the category that viewed stress as not harmful. Even lower than those who claimed to have experienced moderately low-stress levels in their lives.
The study concluded that during the period of this study, 182,000 Americans died from believing that stress was bad for them! That makes believing stress is bad for you the 15th largest cause of death
in the united states. That’s more than causes such as HIV, Skin Cancer and homicide! What’s understood from this study is that changing your mind about stress can change your body’s response to stress. Think about it. What exactly happens to
your body when you are under stress?
Your heart pumps blood faster. To meet the possibility of facing the challenge that lies ahead, sending packets of extra energy to all parts of your body. Your breathing hastens, to give more oxygen to your system.
In a typical stress response section view, the heart rate spikes and the blood vessels constrict. This is probably why stress is so strongly related to cardiovascular diseases. However, for people who
view stress in a positive manner, the heart ate still spikes, however, the blood vessels remain calm and dilated.
The picture to your left has been compared to other emotional experiences and profiles closest to moments of JOY and courage.
Just viewing it correctly matters. If you see it right, your body will make stress work for you. View it more along the lines of “this is my body helping me rise to the challenge ahead” and your stress response becomes healthier.

A study was carried out of 1000 people in the united kingdom. This time the same question was asked– “how much stress the individual felt/ how stressed the individual was?”. But the added caveat was also how much time they’ve spent helping/ caring for other people. And then again, they went back to see how many people died. The bad news again – Every major stress experience amounted to a 30% increase in the death risk probability. However, it was observed that even the stressed people who spent time caring for others had absolutely ZERO stress-related deaths. Caring created resilience. How you think and act can transform your experience of stress. If You view stress as helpful, you create a biology of courage. What I love about this is the idea that stress gives us access to our hearts, that

compassionate heart that gives you joy and meaning in others. And your physical heart makes you prepared for action. Viewing stress this way is making a profound statement. It’s saying that you
can handle life’s challenges, and recognise that you don’t have to face them alone. I for one have always viewed stress/resistance that life threw as the reason that made me stronger. My take was always viewed against the light of character development. However viewing it in the light of a biological response designed to make us more human, make
us more caring to our fellow man /woman whilst physically making us stronger is a far more entrancing idea. One that bode well with the rest of my theories.
As a business owner and entrepreneur, we live on the edge and engage with everything we’ve got. Stress is ubiquitous in our lives. Viewing stress this way has not only changed my life and the lives of
those around me but synergised with my philosophy on life and the effects are evident. I now own and control my IBS and as for the return of my hairline, it has confounded the best of medical professionals. I hope that this article serves as an
intervention in your life and changes your body’s reaction to stress from that of fear and anxiousness to one of Joy and Courage as it has done mine.

Power to the People – The Chemistry

POWER TO THE PEOPLE – THE CHEMISTRY OF OUR PHILOSOPHY

I’ve recently been inspired by stoicism and my reading lists and podcasts playlist seemed to be brimming (ironic for a stoic) with advocacy of simple living.

Ive recently been inspired by stoicism and my reading lists and podcasts playlist seemed to be brimming (ironic for a stoic) with advocacy of simple living. Unable to hit any of my sleep, step or diet goals, i decided a tech detox was in order! But first, as any good sceptic would, i decided
to deep dive into tech detox as a concept. The concept of brain chemicals, their effect on our thoughts and behaviours and their ability to govern every facet of human life, had me gripped. And away we went, down the rabbit hole of credible research, myths, and downright delusional conclusions.
Lets just say, the tech detox never happened. But what did happen was a strong theory developed. One that reinforces our beliefs and reasons for doing what we do.
For living creating and advocating, active lifestyles that focus on physical and mental well-being. The more you read about dopamine the molecule of mor the more you understand how much of a part it plays in every little action you so
innocuously commit to. For the uninitiated, dopamine is a chemical produced by only one in two thousand brain cells. Its called the pleasure molecule because thats exactly what people feel like when dopamine is active in their brains.
Ive recently been inspired by stoicism and my reading lists and podcasts playlist seemed to be brimming (ironic for a stoic) with advocacy of simple living. Dopamine is the key contributing chemical to addiction. Gambling, alcohol, and
drugs are all addictions, driven by dopamine.
The dopamine hit! Its a scary ride, and once you get on that rollercoaster you keep coming back for more. Sounds like a hell of a good business to be in, right? A never-ending supply of customers who can’t get enough and keep wanting more of your product every time they get some? And there lies the problem.
The alcohol, gambling and drug lobbies have been inadvertently using the dopamine- driven business model. Big tech, however, has had no such accidents. The largest investment in clinical studies and the largest single employer of clinical psychologists and research into brain
chemicals and dopamine is big tech. In her book, dopamine nation, anna lembke says the smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for an always-wired generation.
The short-term, dopamine-driven
feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works, chamath palihapitiya, former vice president
of user growth at facebook, told an audience at stanford graduate school of business.
The aim is to psychologically figure out how to manipulate you as fast as possible and then give you back that dopamine hit.
In a similar vein, facebook’s founding president sean parker has admitted that the thought behind the company was: how do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible? So the powers that be know about dopamine and know how to exploit its effects
on us almost to perfection.
The cambridge analytica study showed some insane data on this. Upon a certain number of likes, fb could accurately profile you and know more about you than you know yourself! Safe to say, we need to find an alternative to being driven by dopamine to the tune of the highest bidders. All of them cause physical, social, and psychological harm.

Dopamine’s biggest attribute however isn’t to give pleasure, but to give pleasure when we encounter things that are new and unexpected and exciting. The bigger the surprise, the more dopamine our brain releases. The greatest high is when we encounter an outcome that’s better than what we expected. That feeling of new love? That RUSH? that’s not love that’s you High on dopamine. And when the novelty of the new love wears out, so
does the dopamine. Dopamine makes you fall in love – and out of it! At least the passion version of love.
Scientists have been working on a theory that proposes that our brain divided all information into two categories, near and far. Everything that is close to us, the things we can touch, see and feel at any moment, falls into the ‘near category’.
Anything that’s out of our reach, figuratively or literally falls into the far category. Dopamine is designed by evolution to excite you about everything that falls into the ‘Far’ category and motivates you to pursue them It encourages humans to take that little (or a lot) more risk, to push the boundary to achieve/desire more. This
all sounds great, so what’s the hitch?
Our solution lies in what author Daniel Z Lieberman calls the H&N chemicals. The here and Now chemicals. You may have heard about some of them, substances like serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, and

endocannabinoids. They are all about enjoying the things in the present moment. They are active when you’re working out, dancing, having sex, eating
good food, or watching a beautiful sunset. Ever hear of the runners high? That’s a H&N cocktail at its best. Brain circuits that produce H&N’s tend to
compete with and even suppress the production of dopamine. When you find yourself in a stable long-term relationship, your brain produces less dopamine and more chemicals like oxytocin. Conversely, when you’re CRAZY in love, your serotonin levels drop below usual. Exercise, working out, playing a sport, and being active, are the BIGGEST form of regular and balance production of H&N chemicals and Dopamine. It is the most natural form of creating a dopamine control circuit. True happiness lies in finding this balance.
As an organization, and as a philosophy, e believe in being active, physically and mentally, and living life off the back of H&N chemicals over dopamine. As a business,  we know that dopamine-based forms of
entertainment, are temporary in nature. The customer will keep wanting, bigger, better, and more! That’s why we stay away from entertainment-based engagements, like arcades, movies, etc.
We rely on our customers getting a high every time they run, play or work out on ‘Here and Now’ chemicals, rooting them to the present moment and bringing them the sense of euphoria that they control and cannot be manipulated. One of the
core tenants of business revolves around this philosophy and hence the tag lines in our clubs – POWER to the PEOPLE!
